#TeeBoxChatter – Club Testing SUB 70 Golf 699 Pro Irons

Club testing comes in many forms. From sessions on a driving range to on-course testing. Where testing truly matters most.

So far, testing of the SUB 70 Golf 699 irons has been conducted in a golf dome setting and on the range. January 2nd afforded me the chance to take the testing to the turf. Hitting off of mats is one thing but as most of us know the turf interaction is much different. In particular when the golf course is really soggy.

I headed to St. David’s Golf Club in St. David’s, Ontario to carry on testing of this golf club. The video below explains how testing was done on this day. Enjoy!

‘Tis the Season

Hey Gang:

Well, like it or not that time of the year is upon us. Canadian Thanksgiving is long-gone, Halloween, it’s gone too and so to are Remembrance/Veteran’s Day (depending on where you reside). With the American Thanksgiving having come and gone this past Thursday, all of the turkeys in North America can basically relax, wipe the sweat from their collective brows and gobble along. For every one that celebrated yesterday I hope that you stayed safe and managed to sleep off the tryptophan coma in time to score some terrific Black Friday deals. Personally speaking, I never do the Black Friday thing.

Now that Black Friday has come and gone like those other significant days mentioned beforehand the beginning has come. The official beginning to the holiday season. So whether you celebrate Christmas, Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, Omisoka (Japan) or similar I will be offering a few gift ideas for the golfer in your life. Even if it means the gift is for you.

Some ideas that I’ll be offering come from marketing agencies that I worked with during the year or in some cases throughout the years. In some cases, some of the gift ideas may have pricey costs to them. Knowing that not everyone can have that kind of budget available (I’m one of them) I’ll be offering gift ideas for those on a budget as well. So with that in mind keep an eye open for the 2019 UTNT Holiday Gift Guide. In that guide, I’m going to aim to have all gift ideas under $200. Good luck right?! Not exactly.

Awesome Golf. A software suite for FlightScope Golf.

So stay tuned. As sure as the sun will rise in the east tomorrow morning the holidays are on their way. Like a runaway freight train. Keep an eye open on a “tab” at the top that says “2019 Holiday Gift Ideas”.

Until The Next Tee!!

Step into the zone. SPEEDZONE. COBRA Golf has unveiled its newest line of drivers with the KING SPEEDZONE and KING SPEEDZONE XTREME and these sticks look fast. With inspiration drawn from the auto-racing world (the exhaust pipes), an amazing looking face looking to give you “infinite” distance (Infinity Milled Face), and packed into a traditionally-shaped head (from address) there is much to get golfers in a lather. I for one cannot wait to get my hands onto one.

For the full details please see the press release shared below by Rachel Rees. Ms. Rees is the Senior Manager of Communications for COBRA PUMA Golf.

Until The Next Tee!!

Carlsbad, Calif. (November 19, 2019) Cobra Golf®, a leader in golf club innovation, today introduced its new SPEEDZONE TM Drivers – the company’s fastest and most powerful drivers to date. Taking inspiration from design attributes of the fastest cars in the world, COBRA optimized six unique zones of performance to deliver unrivaled speed and distance in two new drivers, the KING SPEEDZONE and the KING SPEEDZONE XTREME. Like a racecar, every component from the internal chassis design to the exterior shaping was engineered to maximize power output. Below is a rundown of the six zones of performance COBRA delivers in its 2020 SPEEDZONE Driver line.

  1. POWER ZONE – CNC Infinity Milled Face – the face is the engine of the driver and is crucial for generating speed. Using the only CNC Milled Face in a driver, COBRA has expanded the milled area of the face by 95% enabling them to control face & leading-edge thickness. Face and perimeter curvature can be up to 5 times more precise than traditional face polishing. In addition, every face is 100% inspected to ensure a larger SPEEDZONE across the face for maximum ball speed.
  1. STRENGTH ZONE – COBRA’s SPEEDZONE drivers feature a new Titanium T-Bar Speed Chassis. COBRA engineers removed unnecessary titanium to create more discretionary weight while maintaining a strong structure designed to withstand high-speed collisions. The discretionary weight is utilized to create low CG and high inertia resulting in fast, forgiving performance.
  1. LIGHT ZONE – The new SPEEDZONE chassis allows for more carbon fiber than ever before. A 360 Carbon Wrap Crown design makes up 50% of the driver’s body, providing ample stiffness and support to the chassis while saving 25 grams of discretionary weight. That weight has been repositioned low and back and around the perimeter where it is needed most.
  1. LOW CG ZONE – Low CG is essential for driver performance, delivering maximum ball speed, higher launch & low spin. In the KING SPEEDZONE driver, COBRA continues to deliver a low CG for optimal performance, similar to the 2019 SPEEDBACK driver. In the SPEEDZONE driver, 69 grams of mass (vs. 40 in SPEEDBACK) has been strategically positioned low in the driver for optimal launch conditions.
  1. AERO ZONE – combining aerodynamics with a low center of gravity continues to be a strength that COBRA delivers with its drivers. The new SPEEDZONE shaping harnesses airflow for maximum drag reduction and increased clubhead speed.
  1. STABILITY ZONE – High-speed stability is both important in racing and in driver performance. SPEEDZONE’s High MOI Design positions weight away from the center of the head to maximize stability on off-center hits for longer, straighter drives.

Appealing to a wide range of golfing ability levels, COBRA offers two distinct driver models in the SPEEDZONE equipment family. The KING SPEEDZONE Driver ($449) offers a traditional shape profile with front to back CG adjustability allowing better players to work the ball with ease and finetune launch and low spin without sacrificing forgiveness. The KING SPEEDZONE XTREME Driver ($449) is perfect for golfers who are looking for a consistent, straight trajectory with maximum forgiveness on off-center hits. As COBRA’s more forgiving option XTREME features a slightly larger shape profile with more perimeter weighting and a 17-gram tungsten weight that sits behind the rear exhaust pipe design to achieve the company’s highest measured MOI to date.

“Our new KING SPEEDZONE drivers emphatically answered the question we are always asked – can you really improve the driver any further and stay within the rules of golf? That answer is yes,” said Tom Olsavsky, VP of R&D for COBRA Golf. “By approaching design the same way you would if you were trying to create the world’s fastest cars, we left nothing on the table in terms of speed considerations. With our six zones of performance, SPEEDZONE is the fastest driver that we have ever produced.”

Review – Callaway Big Bertha Epic Flash (Driver)

Spoiler Alert: In my opinion, this driver was one of the best that was launched for the 2019 product cycle. It scored very high in points for the Top Driver “Teezy Award” and it actually took the fourth tie-break to eventually finish in second place.

The Pre-Shot Routine

In 2018, Callaway Golf brought us the Big Bertha Rogue driver. A driver that was able to spend a lot of time with, as the testing of that product took place on the course. The first of any such opportunity that I had from the Carlsbad, California golf giant. The Rogue was a driver that performed well, it was a legitimate fairway finder, was reasonable long but I felt that it really lacked something in the sound and feel department. It was a driver that I felt was a little underwhelming regardless of how well it performed. Frankly, I thought the 2017 Epic was superior. So, when Callaway Golf launched the Callaway Golf Big Bertha Epic Flash I was really interested to see how it would fair in comparison to both the Rogue and the Epic.

My opportunity for testing the Epic Flash would take place at the 2019 PGA Show Demo Day in Orlando. To say the least, the Epic Flash impressed is a slight understatement.

When looking at the Epic Flash (driver) there are some key technology points worth pointing out.

  • The Epic Flash driver employs a new Callaway technology called Flash Face to help golfers get more ball speed for more distance
  • Flash Face’s sophisticated architecture was created by Artificial Intelligence – the first known instance of using A.I.in the golf equipment industry — and “Machine Learning,” a field of computer science that uses statistical techniques to give computer systems the ability to “learn” with data without being explicitly programmed.
  • Originally introduced with the original Big Bertha Epic, Jailbreak Technology returns. Jailbreak technology bars stiffen and stabilize the crown and sole, placing more impact load on the face to promote faster ball speed.

  • Sliding 16-gram weight gives golfers the power to easily promote draws, fades or a straighter flight.
  • A new lighter triaxial carbon fabric called T2C has a tighter weave; the weight it saves is redistributed within the head to raise MOI for exceptional forgiveness on off-center hits.
  • There is a variety of premium stock shafts offering ranging from the Project X Even Flow Green, MCA Tensei Blue AV, and the Project X HZRDUS Smoke. Shaft weights vary depending on the type of shaft used. On the lightest end of the spectrum, the Even Flow Green is 40 grams whereas the HZRDUS Smoke goes as heavy as 70 grams.
  • Lofts available are 9*, 10.5* and 12*. Lofts are adjustable 1* lower or 2* higher.

The Transition

The weather on the day of testing during Demo Day was sunny and relatively clear. However, there was a bit of a hurting, knockdown wind that day. All in all, the conditions were absolutely perfect for testing equipment. Especially, at the Callaway Booth hitting area. Prior to me making swings I met with Dave Neville who is the Sr. Director, Brand & Product Management for Callaway Golf. Mr. Neville took the time to talk a little bit about what makes the Epic Flash driver tick.

A key point to touch on here (that was censored by the wind) is that typically when golf manufacturers develop drivers and in particular prototypes generally speaking they creat about 5-7 “Virtual Prototypes”. In the case of the creation of Epic Flash, through the use of “Artificial Intelligence” Callaway golf R&D was able to develop 15K Virtual Prototypes. Staggering!!

When it came to the aesthetics of the Epic Flash I liked nearly everything about it. I loved the green and yellow accents on the sole of the clubhead. It was bold without crossing the line of being overdone. In the case of the Even Flow Green and HZRDUS Smoke shafts, I loved how they melded everything together seamlessly right from the Golf Pride Align Green grip to the head. The Epic Flash scored very high marks in the aesthetics department except for one thing that bothered me. The white line that goes across the top of the crown about a third of the way back. Months removed and this still bugs me. If that line isn’t there, it’s perfect in the looks department. But I do love how it fades from solid black towards the leading edge to the carbon fiber weave all the back to the trailing edge.

The performance of the Epic Flash driver was out of this world. Something from another you could almost say if I were to play on the artificial intelligence card a little. It scored 10/10 for performance and feel/sound. When it came to swinging the Epic Flash I chose the 9* head with a 60-gram HZRDUS Smoke shaft. This combination was an utter rocket ship. Long, penetrating ballflights. My stock shot (right to left draw) was on full display and working the ball in the opposite direction was not stressful at all. My ears and hands loved the sound and feel of the Epic Flash and in a nutshell, Callaway Golf got the Epic Flash right! Period!. They say that they had 15,000 Virtual Protoypes?! Well, the right prototype one.

That white line. The only thing that I disliked about Epic Flash.

For me, the 2017 GBB Epic was exactly how a driver should feel and sound. 2018’s Rogue was a disappointment in comparison. The Epic Flash was/is even better than the 2017 Epic. What a driver!!

The Finish

Even though this review is late in arriving I felt that I had to share my thoughts on it. The Epic Flash driver is a serious stick. It might be the longest of 2019 and it might be the longest for many golfers out there. In hindsight, I wonder what kind of results I would have had with the 50-gram Stiff Even Flow. It looks and feels like a premium offering should. Say what you will about Callaway Golf’s marketing strategy(ies) but the reality is that they produce great equipment. The Epic Flash is no exception.

Until The Next Tee!!
