#TeeBoxChatter – 2020 PGA Show Demo Day Recap

January 21st was Golfmas for golf fans, aficionados, and gear junkies alike. The reason?  That’s because it marked the opening of the PGA Show for 2020. Demo Day took place at a cold, wind-swept Orange County National Golf Resort and Lodge and even though the conditions were very attendee-friendly the weather didn’t dampen the spirits of those in attendance.

Demo Day from the perspective of the Cleveland/Srixon/XXIO booth.

I would be remiss if I failed to mention that I felt really bad for the manufacturers and in particular their reps. Seeing equipment company representatives bundled up in long coats, gloves, scarves, and beanies (or as we call them in Canada… toques) was hard to witness but not one of the representatives that I talked to let it hamper their excitement. After all, Demo Day at the PGA Show is the perfect time to showcase your wares.

It didn’t take me long to find the first terrific product of the day. The new CBX Full Face wedge from Cleveland Golf was very fun to swing. Using a 64* wedge I was able to hit accurate bunker shots and pitches and the best part. The CBX Full Face is a forgiving wedge. If you need help with your short-game… This might be the wedge for you. Staying with the Srixon/Cleveland Golf/XXIO family the new range of XXIO products was exactly as advertised. The more forgiving Eleven range (geared towards the moderate swing-speed golfer) was among the easiest to swing golf clubs that I have made wings this. That said, Eleven’s brethren the XXIO X (geared towards faster swingers) performed as advertised. If you’ve never made swings with XXIO… Do so. I really liked the “Weight Plus” technology in the grips. More on that at a later time.

Just released on January 21st. The CBX Full Face wedge from Cleveland Golf.

There were certain brands with products that were on my immediate radar. COBRA Golf and their SPEEDZONE range of products coupled with the Forged Tec irons were everything that I thought that they would be. I had a terrific interview with Tom Olsavsky. Mr. Olsavky is the VP of Research and Development. The interview will be posted here at a later time.

COBRA Golf KING Forged Tec ONE Length. Just… WOW!

Just to finish off the writing of this article (it is #TeeBoxChatter) I just wanted to touch on a couple of surprises. Pictures didn’t wow me in the leading up to the PGA Show of the LaunchPad metalwoods from Wilson Golf. They impressed! High Heat 257+ metalwoods with TGS (Turf Glide Sole) were a pleasant surprise. Hitting the hybrid out of a literal hole (massive divot) was easy. It might be the most forgiving golf club in the industry. Drivers from Yonex and ONOFF late in the day could factor in on Teezy Awards nominations. Speaking of which, the Prowler VT driver from Lynx Golf featuring “SwitchFace Technology” was a Demo Day “sleeper”. And then there was Honma Golf. I have no words other than to say “look out”!. That is one seriously impressive range of products. I didn’t even know that they were attending. Tour Edge Golf released a new putter (The Wingman) and the Exotics EXS 220 product range was improved “big time” over 2019’s uber-impressive Exotics EXS range. Mizuno Golf added a whole bunch of new technology with their new ST200 metalwoods. The range has three different heads (ST200, ST200G, and ST200X).

IMG_20200121_145710184

There were a couple of golf clubs that I was lukewarm towards and among them was the MAVRIK from Callaway Golf. I really was perplexed with it until I mistakenly put a 70-gram X-flex shaft into my hands. Overall, it didn’t give me “awe factor” like the Epic Flash did in 2019.

Well, I think that’s enough reading. So how about some “chatter”?

Carlsbad, Calif. (November 19, 2019) Cobra Golf®, a leader in golf club innovation, today introduced the 2020 KING SPEEDZONE family of clubs, including Fairways & Hybrids. COBRA Golf engineers optimized specific zones throughout the club’s construction that works to deliver the best combination of power, speed, and distance.

webimage-2793147F-D5BB-41A0-8F79484F4A5AAE0D

For 2020, COBRA is offering golfers the choice of three new fairway woods designed to suit a wide variety of golfers. The first, the KING SPEEDZONE Fairway ($279), is a more traditional model, designed with back weighting and a slightly shallower face for easy launch, higher trajectories and maximum forgiveness that yields increased distance. The second, the KING SPEEDZONE Tour Fairway ($279), features a compact shape, with forward CG weighting, designed for better players that desire low spin, a more piercing trajectory and workability. The third fairway offering is the SPEEDZONE Big Tour Fairway ($279) which features the largest profile of the three, stronger loft, forward CG weighting, and near-zero CGna, that produces the optimal combination of fast ball speed, high launch and low spin for extreme distance. All three fairway options feature COBRA CONNECT Powered by Arccos which allows golfers to track the accuracy and distance of every shot using the Arccos Caddie app on their smart device.

Throughout the three KING SPEEDZONE fairway offerings, COBRA engineers focused on optimizing four key “zones” in order to deliver more distance, forgiveness, and accuracy than ever before.

ZONE 1 – THE POWER ZONE – the only forged CNC Milled Face in a fairway wood, created using industry-leading face manufacturing technology, allows for a thinner and hotter face design that is up to five times more precise than traditional hand polishing. This allows COBRA’s R&D team to repeatedly, and consistently, expand the zone for maximum ball speed.

ZONE 2 – THE FLEX ZONE – The new split rail structure divides the rail system into a front and rear portion. The front rails, silver in color, have been hollowed out to create thinner walls that flex with impact while still providing Baffler Rail technology to prevent the leading edge of the fairway from digging. The result is more flection for ball speed and higher launch, and a leading-edge that glides through the turf delivering more club head speed through impact.

webimage-7B7FA413-2D82-48C1-95A2150E6E480A6B

ZONE 3 – THE STABILITY ZONE – Dual Baffler Rails provide excellent stability and speed through the turf, allowing the club to glide effortlessly out of any lie and deliver more club and ball speed at impact.

ZONE 4 – THE LIGHT ZONE – An ultralight carbon fiber crown saves 10 grams of discretionary weight that is strategically positioned to lower the CG for higher launch with increased forgiveness. Rounding out the high-performance design, MyFly with SmartRail™ technology affords golfers their choice of five (5) loft settings and three (3) draw settings to help manage trajectory and customize launch conditions while Smart Rail™ keeps the face square regardless of the loft setting.

Providing the perfect complement to the SPEEDZONE fairway woods, COBRA is also unveiling its new KING SPEEDZONE Hybrids, available in Variable or ONE Length designs. Again, engineers optimized specific zones of the construction to engineer the highest level of performance in a hybrid.

The performance can be attributed to the following key technologies:

 Hollow Split Rail Technology – allows for more flex than solid rails, creating a larger hot spot for higher launch and increased distance.
 Back Weighting – weight concentrated low and back creates higher launch, more spin, towering trajectories and maximum carry.
 Forged E9 Face- A forged, two-piece construction features a high-strength 455 stainless steel that can be designed thinner for increased ball speed.
 Refined Shape – slightly larger than a traditional hybrid, the shape features a high MOI for increased forgiveness on off-center hits, and a square leading edge to improve alignment and accuracy.
 COBRA Connect – Track your accuracy and distance and overall performance using the Arccos Caddie app on your smart device.

The KING SPEEDZONE men’s Hybrids (MAP $229) are available in 2H (17 O ), 3H (19 O ), 4H (21 O ) & 5h (24 O ) of loft and come standard with a aftermarket UST Recoil 480 ESX shaft in R, S or LITE Flex and a black Lamkin Crossline (58+) COBRA CONNECT grip.

The KING SPEEDZONE Women’s Hybrids, in a stunning Matte Black/Rose Gold colorway, are available in 4H (21 O ), 5H (24 O ), 6H (28 O ) and 7H (31 O ) of loft and come stock with UST Recoil 450 ESX shaft in ladies’ flex and a black/rose gold Lamkin Crossline COBRA CONNECT grip.

The KING SPEEDZONE ONE Length Hybrids (MAP $229) share the same performance boosting technologies as the traditional length hybrids do, in COBRA’s patented ONE Length configuration. Each hybrid features 7-iron length configuration to simplify a players’ game by allowing them to use one repeatable set-up and swing, giving them 7-iron consistency in their hybrid.

These hybrids are available in 2H (19 O ), 4H (21 O ) and 5H (24 O ) of loft and come standard with a UST Recoil 480 ESX shaft in S, R or LITE flexes (in RH/LH) and a blue Lamkin Crossline COBRA CONNECT grip.

All KING SPEEDZONE products are available at retail at online, January 17, 2020. For more information on the full SPEEDZONE family visit, http://www.cobragolf.com.

COBRA INVITES GOLFERS TO ENTER THE SPEEDZONE WITH ITS FASTEST, MOST TECHNOLOGICALLY ADVANCED DRIVER FAMILY EVER

Step into the zone. SPEEDZONE. COBRA Golf has unveiled its newest line of drivers with the KING SPEEDZONE and KING SPEEDZONE XTREME and these sticks look fast. With inspiration drawn from the auto-racing world (the exhaust pipes), an amazing looking face looking to give you “infinite” distance (Infinity Milled Face), and packed into a traditionally-shaped head (from address) there is much to get golfers in a lather. I for one cannot wait to get my hands onto one.

Carlsbad, Calif. (November 19, 2019) Cobra Golf®, a leader in golf club innovation, today introduced its new SPEEDZONE TM Drivers – the company’s fastest and most powerful drivers to date. Taking inspiration from design attributes of the fastest cars in the world, COBRA optimized six unique zones of performance to deliver unrivaled speed and distance in two new drivers, the KING SPEEDZONE and the KING SPEEDZONE XTREME. Like a racecar, every component from the internal chassis design to the exterior shaping was engineered to maximize power output. Below is a rundown of the six zones of performance COBRA delivers in its 2020 SPEEDZONE Driver line.

webimage-2416580F-316D-457F-8645E2CD8E2FC2FC

  1. POWER ZONE – CNC Infinity Milled Face – the face is the engine of the driver and is crucial for generating speed. Using the only CNC Milled Face in a driver, COBRA has expanded the milled area of the face by 95% enabling them to control face & leading-edge thickness. Face and perimeter curvature can be up to 5 times more precise than traditional face polishing. In addition, every face is 100% inspected to ensure a larger SPEEDZONE across the face for maximum ball speed.
  1. STRENGTH ZONE – COBRA’s SPEEDZONE drivers feature a new Titanium T-Bar Speed Chassis. COBRA engineers removed unnecessary titanium to create more discretionary weight while maintaining a strong structure designed to withstand high-speed collisions. The discretionary weight is utilized to create low CG and high inertia resulting in fast, forgiving performance.
  1. LIGHT ZONE – The new SPEEDZONE chassis allows for more carbon fiber than ever before. A 360 Carbon Wrap Crown design makes up 50% of the driver’s body, providing ample stiffness and support to the chassis while saving 25 grams of discretionary weight. That weight has been repositioned low and back and around the perimeter where it is needed most.
  1. LOW CG ZONE – Low CG is essential for driver performance, delivering maximum ball speed, higher launch & low spin. In the KING SPEEDZONE driver, COBRA continues to deliver a low CG for optimal performance, similar to the 2019 SPEEDBACK driver. In the SPEEDZONE driver, 69 grams of mass (vs. 40 in SPEEDBACK) has been strategically positioned low in the driver for optimal launch conditions.
  1. AERO ZONE – combining aerodynamics with a low center of gravity continues to be a strength that COBRA delivers with its drivers. The new SPEEDZONE shaping harnesses airflow for maximum drag reduction and increased clubhead speed.
  1. STABILITY ZONE – High-speed stability is both important in racing and in driver performance. SPEEDZONE’s High MOI Design positions weight away from the center of the head to maximize stability on off-center hits for longer, straighter drives.

webimage-48247A40-6E05-40E6-957A32BBCB999016

Appealing to a wide range of golfing ability levels, COBRA offers two distinct driver models in the SPEEDZONE equipment family. The KING SPEEDZONE Driver ($449) offers a traditional shape profile with front to back CG adjustability allowing better players to work the ball with ease and finetune launch and low spin without sacrificing forgiveness. The KING SPEEDZONE XTREME Driver ($449) is perfect for golfers who are looking for a consistent, straight trajectory with maximum forgiveness on off-center hits. As COBRA’s more forgiving option XTREME features a slightly larger shape profile with more perimeter weighting and a 17-gram tungsten weight that sits behind the rear exhaust pipe design to achieve the company’s highest measured MOI to date.

“Our new KING SPEEDZONE drivers emphatically answered the question we are always asked – can you really improve the driver any further and stay within the rules of golf? That answer is yes,” said Tom Olsavsky, VP of R&D for COBRA Golf. “By approaching design the same way you would if you were trying to create the world’s fastest cars, we left nothing on the table in terms of speed considerations. With our six zones of performance, SPEEDZONE is the fastest driver that we have ever produced.”

The Golf Industry Expo and My Naivety

So yesterday I finally made it to a golf trade show that I’ve been meaning to make it to for some time. That show… “The Golf Industry Expo” as put on in conjunction with the PGA of Ontario (Canada). It’s a golf trade show that brings together members of the golf industry from all aspects of our sport on a much smaller scale than that of the PGA Merchandise Show that’s held every January in Orlando, Florida.

The show took place in Kitchener, Ontario at a place called LOT42. It’s a really cool place as it’s a former industrial complex turned into a convention-type facility 9event venue). Being a first-time to the show I really didn’t know what to expect. After all, when I think of an industry show it’s hard not to think about the PGA Show. But, as I walked in and picked-up my badge I also received a really nice swag bag. It was actually an Adidas backpack. Which coincidentally will be making the trip to Orlando. It wasn’t until I had got home when I realized that there was swag inside. Inside were items like a golf towel by Blank Towel, a pair of sunglasses from Vigor Eyewear (Falcon Lumen+ model) and a couple of other little goodies. I’ll definitely put the sunglasses to good use. I look forward to testing and reviewing them.

web_Lot42-Nick-Lee_BestofToronto-2017-015-500x333

Great venue. LOT42 (Photo Credit: Explore Waterloo Region)

As I walked the floor, I couldn’t help but notice that some of the golf equipment industry’s players were there. Brands like TaylorMade Golf (Canada), Wilson Golf, Mizuno Golf, Cobra Golf, Cleveland/Srixon/XXIO, Tour Edge Golf (Golf Trends is their distributor here in Canada) and EVNROLL Putters (more. What’s different however about this show is that while everybody exhibiting at the PGA Show is for the most part no longer under embargo a lot of the product at this show is in fact under embargo. So in those cases, pictures are not possible.

But this show gave me a chance to see some products in-hand for the first time and it was products that I’ve shared press releases on already. So that makes it pretty darn cool. Here’s what I can tell you about a few of these products in a brief summary…

  • Cleveland Golf – The Launcher HB Turbo range of metalwoods looks really serious and I cannot wait to put swings on with them. They look like they’re going to be all business. They just look mean. The Launcher HALO hybrid has a great profile and if it performs anywhere near it looks (Gliderails to improve turf interaction) it WILL end up in a lot of golfers’ golf bags. The Launcher UHX look like they’re going to be long and may end up as a sleeper this year. Considering that they also will retail at $999.99 CAD makes them a consideration.

  • Cobra Golf – I won’t mince words. The KING Forged TEC are way nicer than the press release made them look. They look great in the release. They are stunning and these irons I cannot wait to put swings on and see how they perform. A review of these irons is imminent. However, what really surprised were their new T-Rail irons which is an all-hollow hybrid iron set. I wasn’t sold on their looks in the release and I was concerned about how they’d look at address. I can tell you that they weren’t that bad at all. As a matter of fact, when it came to the PW you could not see the cavity. These are going to worth a swing or three.

  • Mizuno Golf – The new MP-20 irons are beautiful. It doesn’t matter whether it’s the hollow-bodied HMB, the MMC, or the MB. Golfers are going to love them. Oh believe the info coming in… the ST200 line of metalwoods is coming. It’s on the USGA Conforming Golf Clubs List.
  • Wilson Golf – I finally saw the Staff Proto Blades in hand and yes they have been out for some time. For the longest time, I felt that the FG Tour 100 were the prettiest irons that I’ve ever seen. They were. The Staff Proto Blades are prettier and dare I say… More pure.

staff proto

So it was great to see some of the products that I’ve shared press releases about and have them in-hand for the first time. But what about the stuff that I saw that I wasn’t allowed to take pictures of? Products under embargo? All that I will comment on is this. TaylorMade Golf has new golf balls on the way. The new irons from Wilson Staff for 2020 are absolutely going to smash it out of the ballpark. The new range of metalwoods from Cobra Golf reintroduces us to a couple of letters and holy smokes these have my curiosity beyond piqued!!

Oh about the title and my naivety. I rolled a new putter from EVNROLL that’s under embargo. I rolled putts with the new putter (ER10) and while I couldn’t take pics I will say that this putter is already a contender for a Teezy Award in 2020. It’s under embargo until a large golf website/blog leaks pictures of it. I’ll say it… it’s MGS. Hey! Some food for thought. Is it a leak if it’s planned? That’s not a leak. What it is… Is this! It’s actually how a golf blog/website gets a leg up on its competitors. SO, that’s what it takes to get a leg up eh?! Back door channels and discussions no doubt with a price tag attached to it. As much as I knew that this industry is elitist at its roots I didn’t think websites were too. I’ll never be them or the others and I’m okay with that. Don’t worry MGS et al… I’m just one little guy and you needn’t be worried about me. I wish that the rep hadn’t told me that but seeing that he did… It’s my responsibility as a writer to tell you that just because someone says it’s leaked… it’s not. Don’t always believe what you read.

Until The Next Tee!!

The COBRA T-RAIL irons fuse a hollow, hybrid shape with an iron face and topline, creating an iron-hybrid design that delivers the perfect blend of distance, forgiveness, and accuracy. A hollow body construction creates a lower, deeper CG than traditional cavity-back iron designs allow and makes getting the ball airborne and on the desired target line easier than ever before. The Baffler Rails make their way into the irons, providing excellent turf interaction for more speed and stability out of every lie. A high-strength, forged steel face designed with E9 Technology features a thin pocket from heel to toe to enhance ball speed and distance on off-center hits.

“T-RAIL irons make it easy for beginners and golfers who have lost some distance and control to gain the confidence needed to play better and have more fun,” said Tom Olsavsky, VP of R&D, COBRA Golf. “Players who need max forgiveness and are looking for more distance will be amazed at how far and straight they hit these, even being able to get them airborne from tough lies.”

The innovative design of the T-RAIL combo set combines a hollow, iron-hybrid construction in the 5-PW with a 4-hybrid to make a 7-piece set for max forgiveness, high launch and improved gapping through the set. T-RAIL Irons are available in both men’s and women’s set make-ups.

The Men’s T-RAIL Graphite 7-piece Combo Set ($899), in a black/blue colorway, offers a 4-hybrid and 5-PW irons in RH or LH options, with COBRA ULTRALITE 50g graphite shafts (Stiff, Regular and Lite) and COBRA Lamkin REL midsize grips. A 5-hybrid and 6-hybrid is also available through custom for the ultimate combo set with T-RAIL performance.

COBRA GOLF’S NEW KING FORGED TEC IRONS OFFER BETTER PLAYERS A POWERFUL COMBINATION OF ACCURACY, FEEL, DISTANCE AND FORGIVENESS IN AN EYE-CATCHING DESIGN

COBRA Golf has introduced its next generation of KING Forged TEC Irons, featuring a traditional muscle-back shape with a hollow design for a softer feel and improved power preferred by better players, available in a variable or ONE Length set make-up. Fusing a classic look with modern, cutting-edge face, finish and feel technologies, the KING Forged TEC irons provide golfers with the ideal balance of precision and distance.

A sleek, muscle-back shape and sophisticated design of the Forged TEC Irons encloses an unassuming hollow body that delivers low CG and helps maximize distance, forgiveness, and playability. A hollow cavity is infused with energizing foam microspheres that fine-tune acoustics and create the softer feel that better players desire while supporting a thin PWRSHELL Face for increased ball speeds. An updated forged face insert creates a larger Sweet Zone and return area for higher launch and faster ball speeds in a player’s iron. A tungsten toe weight centers the CG behind the hitting zone to maximize distance and increase precision for attacking pins, even on off-center hits.

Like a majority of COBRA equipment, the Forged TEC irons will feature the innovative COBRA CONNECT Powered by Arccos allowing users to track their accuracy and distance using the Arccos Caddie app on a smart device. Electronically embedded sensors in the grip automatically record the distance and accuracy of every shot so golfers can track their improvements round-to-round.

The KING Forged TEC ONE Length irons offer an added dimension of consistency, as COBRA engineers have manipulated the design of each iron to match the weight and length of a 7-iron, allowing for one simple, repetitive setup and swing motion to reduce variability and increase consistency between clubs. This is primarily achieved through matching 7-iron head and swing weights in every iron to create a consistent feel throughout the set. Weight is added to the ONE Length long irons to compensate for shorter (37.50”) shafts and to match 7-iron swing weight, while weight is removed from the short irons & wedges to compensate for longer shafts while still delivering traditional 7-iron swing weight.

In addition, lie angles have been adjusted to optimize ball flight in a ONE Length set configuration. Long irons utilize more upright lie angles, while the short irons and wedges have slightly flatter lie angles delivering more consistent trajectory and ball flights. Lighter long-iron shafts encourage easy launch while heavier wedge shafts promote more control into and around the green.

The Forged Tec ONE Length irons are available through stock in a 7-piece (4-PW) set in stiff and regular, in both right and left-handed versions (graphite is available through custom in x-stiff, stiff and regular). The steel version comes equipped with a KBS $-Taper Lite (115- stiff, 110 – reg, 120 – wedge) shaft with Lamkin Crossline COBRA CONNECT grips in a blue colorway.

The steel KBS $-Taper Lite shaft is offered in both regular (R110) and stiff (S115) flexes.  Graphite offerings in Project X Catalyst 80 in regular, stiff and x-stiff flexes are available through custom only.  Each set comes stock with Lamkin Crossline COBRA CONNECT grips in black.
