Carlsbad, CA (June 11, 2020) – COBRA Golf®, a leader in golf club innovation, today introduced its new KING Utility irons, delivering improved distance with a classic look and modern technology. The KING Utility iron is designed for players who seek maximum control and precision on tee shots and longer approach shots on par 5’s. A classic, muscle-back iron shape delivers the feeling of controlled ball flights, while a wider sole and hollow body provides stability, power, and a low centered CG for trajectories that are high and penetrating. A PWRSHELL™ face insert adds to the performance by expanding the sweet zone for improved ball speeds on off-center hits and launch efficiency for improved trajectory.

Normally only found in Metalwoods, COBRA engineers integrated into the Utility design the trusted COBRA MyFly8™ technology, a series of eight adjustable loft settings that give users the ability to manage trajectory and launch for proper distance gapping. Additionally, the KING Utility irons are geared with COBRA CONNECT™ Powered by Arccos Caddie, an artificial intelligence system that utilizes Smart Grips with embedded sensors to track and record distance and accuracy data on the Arccos Caddie app. COBRA blends a classic design with cutting-edge engineering, including a hollow-body design, forged PWRSHELL Face, and Tungsten Weighting, to deliver superior performance that users can track and analyze using the in-depth data provided by the Arccos Caddie system.

The KING Utility is also offered in a ONE Length™ configuration (graphite – $219), while sharing the technologies of its variable-length counterpart, is designed at 7-iron length (37.50”), making it a perfect complement to any of COBRA’S ONE Length iron offerings. Having a constant length through the set promotes one repeatable set-up and swing for more consistency, while the head design and weighting are fine-tuned to provide uniformity of feel through the set. Traditional variable-length players can also benefit from the consistency and accuracy of the ONE Length Utility iron. After analyzing player test and GEARS test results, a shorter length has been shown to improve playability in the long irons and promote center contact for more precision.

COBRA KING Utility irons (graphite – $219) will be available in a 2-Utility in RH (adjustable from 16 – 19 degrees), 3-Utility in RH/LH (adjustable from 18 – 21 degrees) and 4-Utility in RH/LH (adjustable from 21 – 24 degrees). The standard Utility comes with a steel KBS $-Taper lite (in S or R flex) and a graphite Project X Catalyst 80 (in X-Stiff, S, or R flex) shaft options with a Lamkin Crossline CONNECT Black grip. The KING Utility ONE Length irons will be available in a 3-Utility (adjustable from 18 – 21 degrees), 4-Utility (adjustable from 21 to 24 degrees), and a 5-Utility (adjustable from 24 to 27 degrees). The ONE Length Utility offering comes standard with a steel KBS $-Taper lite (in S or R flex) and a graphite Project X Catalyst 80 (in S, XS, or R flex) shaft options with a Lamkin Crossline CONNECT Blue grip.

KING Utility products will be available at retail and online, tomorrow, June 12, 2020. For more information on the full King family, visit

“First Impressions Review” – COBRA Golf KING SPEEDZONE Driver

The COBRA Golf KING SPEEDZONE was one of the many drivers that I looked forward to swinging in 2020. I had initially seen one in-hand for the first time back in October during an industry show in Kitchener, Ontario. At the time, I salivated in anticipation of what might be, based on the cosmetics of this driver. Would it live up to my expectations?

That was a question that I would have answered at the 2020 PGA Show in Orlando, Florida. Here is my review of the COBRA Golf KING SPEEDZONE driver based on the first impressions that it gave me at Demo Day at Orange County National Golf Resort and Lodge.

The Set-Up

COBRA Golf KING SPEEDZONE (SZ) drivers come in two different models that will appeal to golfers looking for new drivers in 2020. COBRA Golf is offering both a “standard” KING SPEEDZONE and a KING SPEEDZONE XTREME. While the two drivers come with the same chassis, there are some differences between the two of them. Before looking at their differences, let’s see what the two models have in common.

COBRA Golf touts that the new line of KING SPEEDZONE drivers are their longest, most powerful drivers that they’ve created to date. Drawing inspiration from motorsports, these drivers look fast just sitting still. You can see some of this inspiration just by looking at their “dual exhaust” inside of the rear of the trailing edge. The KING SZ drivers feature a CNC-milled face like we first saw in 2018 with that year’s KING F8. Just that this face has a twist, or shall I say a face with an infinity symbol which of course means “no limits” or “endless”.

“Infinity Face” is one of the technologies that we see in the KING SZ. In utilizing Infinity Face. the face sees an expanded sweet zone and more ball speed across the entire surface area of the face.

The “T-Bar Chassis” was introduced this year. The T-Bar Chassis is a section of the interior part that runs from the leading edge all of the way to the trailing edge. In adapting this cross-member COBRA Golf R&D were able to create a stronger frame and in doing so improved the feel and durability of the KING SZ driver.

Do you like the look of carbon fiber? If so, KING SZ drivers are just what you might be looking for. The KING SZ features a “360 Carbon Wrap”. The 360 Carbon Wrap covers a whopping 50% of the body. The use of all of the carbon fiber allowed COBRA Golf to move a staggering 25-grams of discretionary weight to use elsewhere. This is an absolute luxury in golf club design. By moving the weight around to other areas of the KING SZ drivers, this enabled engineers to create a driver with forgiveness to burn.

Making a return and introduced in 2019 is SPEEDBACK technology.SPEEDBACK weighting is a total of 69-grams of weight that’s positioned as low as possible resulting in the KING SZ driver’s high launch and low spin characteristics. SPEEDBACK AERO SHAPE gives the KING SZ a streamlined shape that transfers airflow energy which aids in providing “maximum acceleration” into the golf ball where you need it most. Through the impact zone.

Both drivers are offered in either a yellow and black or a white and black colorway.

KING SPEEDZONE: This driver is for “better player’s” looking for a driver that packs a ton of punch into a head that is more traditional in its appearance. Very notable is that golfers have the opportunity to find their optimal launch and spin characteristics via two adjustable weights (front and back) that adjust the center of gravity (CG). For lower spin in what’s already a head that’s designed to be lower spinning, golfers can place a heavier weight in the front which brings this low-spinning head even less spin. This is a feature that might benefit the higher spin player that doesn’t fit into the recommended profile (0 to 10 handicap). The standard lofts are 9* and 10.5* respectively. The KING SZ is designed to be controllable and workable.

KING SPEEDZONE XTREME: The KING SZ XTREME is designed with higher handicaps in mind. The targeted handicap is anybody that play’s to over a 10 handicap. Players with a lower handicap can benefit from this driver. The profile is a little more oversized and forgiveness is the key design feature here. There is one weight seen in the sole of the KING SZ XTREME. this weight is placed low and back aiding in the launch and enhanced MOI characteristics. The KING SZ XTREME is offered in standard lofts of 9*, 10.5* and 12* respectively. The head of the XTREME is described as being low to mid-spin.

** Both drivers have several hosel adjustments typically seen in COBRA Golf over the last several years. These adjustments include adjustments of +/- 1.5*.

The Transition

There’s a reason why the KING SZ drivers scored very high marks in my Teezy Awards adjudication process. Ultimately the KING SZ scored very well, earning 45.5/50 points (91%) and securing the Silver Medal Teezy Award.

Aesthetically-speaking this is a driver as mentioned that looks fast sitting still. The inspiration from motorsports racing is obvious. Not only are the red “dual exhaust tips” noticeable but so are the “racing stripes” and accents just add to the illusion that this driver is fast and packed with plenty of horsepower. The KING SZ drivers have plenty of “rack appeal”  and they really do stand out in a golf shop. The face of the KING SZ is the prettiest in the industry. The CNC-milling is done with a purpose and the infinity symbol is another cosmetic stand-out of this driver. Your face is my case KING SZ.

In the address position, there is a difference in the profile between the two heads. It’s a difference that isn’t glaring in my opinion. But there is a difference. Either way, the look at address is confidence-inspiring. You get over the golf ball and you just want to put a swing on with the KING SZ. You just sort of have that urge to annihilate the golf ball and cause it cruel and unusual punishment. The KING SZ just sits so great at address. I like the simple alignment aid and the detailing around the trailing edge.

The performance of the KING SZ drivers is outstanding. Starting with the feel and the acoustics of the KING SZ drivers. Exactly what I look for in a driver. The acoustics are not intrusively loud but are also not muted in any way. When you make a good swing with these drivers you know it because the golf ball “blasts off of the starting line” (drag-racing reference). The sound and feel are so gratifying and in saying that I actually scored the feel and acoustics a perfect 10/10.  Sticking with the feel for a second, I just wanted to touch on the “other” feel. The feel through impact. Out of the two drivers, I liked the feel more of the SZ than the XTREME through the impact zone. I just felt like that I knew where the clubhead was at all times whereas with the XTREME I sort of “lost” that reference point. The ballflight is long and deep with both versions of the KING SPEEDZONE drivers. The ball gets up quickly and flattens out quickly. The flight penetrates and just flies downrange. In fairness though, the COBRA Golf booth was set-up in their customary location on the range at Demo Day, which gave them the advantage of attendees making swings with a helping wind.

The KING SZ XTREME might be one of the most-forgiving drivers that I made swings with at the 2020 PGA Show and among the most-forgiving that I’ve ever made swings with. I would definitely place it in the top two and that’s because it just seemed that no matter what I did, the golf ball went straight. Off-center strikes stayed straight and true with nary a loss in distance. The KING SZ is also a forgiving driver, so if you’re looking for a forgiving driver and prefer a more traditional shape, do not shy away from the KING SZ if you don’t “fit the profile” of the geared towards golfer of this driver.

The Finish

I’ve said in the past that COBRA Golf is one of the biggest “movers and shakers” in the golf industry. The KING SZ drivers have not changed my sentiment. If you’re a golfer looking for a new driver in 2020 these drivers should be a serious contender and on your “must swing” list. The list impressive as far as the stock shaft offerings that include the Project X HZRDUS Smoke Yellow 60, the UST Mamiya HeLIUM, Aldila Rogue Silver 60 (110 MSI) and the Tensei CK AV Blue 60 from MCA.

The KING SZ and SZ XTREME drivers boast a perfect combination of distance and forgiveness. The latter is undeniable. Golfers will love the explosive feel off of the face. In my opinion, these drivers are an upgrade over their counterparts from 2019 and mot by a small margin. The KING SZ and SZ XTREME drivers definitely met my expectations and then some. One of the best of drivers of 2020.

2020 Teezy Awards – Equipment Edition (Top Equipment Manufacturer)

All of the Teezy Awards winners have been handed out for the individual categories. Congratulations go out to all of the winners and the finalists. The 2020 PGA Show taught me something very important. It was a lesson that I learned in 2019 and it seems to be even more true in 2020.

There’s a ton of parity in the golf equipment industry and it makes me wonder how much more the equipment industry can stretch the envelope in R&D terms, to bring us even better equipment as the product cycles progress year-in and year-out. Sometimes, just a shaft can make a difference to a golfer from a product being a winner or a loser. Look no further than my Callaway Golf MAVRIK driver experience. If you aren’t familiar look for the review or the “Top Driver” Teezy Awards here (MAVRIK Review).

The time has come for me to name the “Top Manufacturer” Teezy Awards medal winners from the 2020 PGA Show Demo Day. How did I determine the winners? I looked at a lot of factors. Factors that included…

  • Teezy Award winners. Did they win awards this year?
  • Did they have a full product range of golf equipment? Driver down to putter (not including golf balls)
  • Variety of products. Irons sets etc for all skill levels
  • Price point

The Teezy Awards are never a popularity contest. The Teezy Awards is and always will be about what gave me the best performance no matter how big or small a  manufacturer is. So, without further delay, these are your Teezy Award medal winners for the Top Manufacturer from the 2020 PGA Show.

Gold – Tour Edge Golf

Tour Edge Golf is coming off of their best year ever. 2019 was massive for the Batavia, Illinois golf equipment manufacturer. Tour Edge’s Exotics EXS 220 product range for all intents and purposes blew their ECS range from 2019 out of the water. The brand is gaining more and more traction on professional golf tours. The EXS 220 driver has found its way into a number of players’ bags and that trend will continue as the season wears on. The Exotics 220 range won medals in the Top Driver, Top Fairway Metals, Top Hybrid, Top Utility-Iron, Top Game-Improvement Irons and Top Putter categories. Winning 5 Gold Medals in the process. As I was adding up and determining the winners for each category, I was actually shocked to see it unfold the way that it did. Their price point across the range sets them apart from everybody else. If there’s a knock against Tour Edge Golf and their EXS 220 product range, it might be the lack of “Lefty Love”. There is no doubt in my mind that Tour Edge Golf lives up to its tagline. “Pound for Pound… Nothing Comes Close”.

Silver – COBRA Golf

Taking home the Silver for “Top Manufacturer” is COBRA Golf. In 2019, as much as I liked their range, they generally came up short for Teezy Award consideration. KING F9 was a really good stick but it wasn’t enough to see a podium. 2020 is much different. COBRA Golf won multiple awards this year including Gold for the Top Fairway Metal. The KING SPEEDZONE metalwoods are extremely strong and as far as I’m concerned are a definite upgrade over the F9. The Forged Tec are irons that were everything that I thought that they would be and more while the SPEEDZONE irons are worth a serious look for golfers looking for a new GI iron set. The T-Rail Hybrid Iron set which is an ultra game-improvement set is stupid easy to get the ball elevated with. Recently, I made swings with these irons. I began the undertaking of swinging left-handed and these were the first irons that made swings with from the left side. I feel like I could have gone right out to the course with them and played some golf. That day, was my first day hitting balls from the “wrong side of the golf ball”. I’ve said that COBRA Golf is one of the biggest “movers and shakers” in the industry. 2020 just further cemented that sentiment.

Bronze – Callaway Golf

Callaway Golf as everyone might expect brought some great products for 2020. It’s almost to be expected from the golf equipment manufacturing giant. That sort of expectation can be both a blessing and a curse. Callaway Golf has set the bar extremely high for themselves which I admire. They strive for the best. Starting with the MAVRIK metalwoods, the offerings are solid. They have 3 different driver models (MAVRIK, MAVRIK Sub Zero, and MAVRIK Max) all with their own characteristics. I would say that consumers will generally gravitate toward MAVRIK seeing that it’s a “happy-medium”. I’ve written ad nauseum about my experience with the MAVRIK driver. Had I suspected for one second that I needed an X-Stiff 70-gram shaft the MAVRIK might have won the “Top Driver” category. Honestly, I had been deliberating on the MAVRIK driver and my feelings with it since standing in an empty Orange County National Golf Resort and Lodge field.  Callaway has a buffet of iron options ranging from the APEX Forged down to the super game-improvement MAVRIK Max. The MAVRIK Pro irons won the Gold for the “Top Player’s/Player’s Distance” category. These were a player’s set of irons that seemed like they were an SGI iron set. The JAWS MD5 wedges were also award winners and rounding out their line-up is a bevy of puters from Odyssey Golf.

Until The Next Tee!!

2020 Teezy Awards – Equipment Edition (Game-Improvement Irons)

Game-Improvement (GI) Irons. They are designed with one intended purpose. To help golfers shoot lower scores and provide more enjoyment on the golf course. How is this achieved? By designing golf clubs that are easy to launch, provide a lot of forgiveness and to allow golfers to hit the ball further with in some cases very strong lofts.

When it comes to GI irons there are actually a few different degrees of “improvement” in the genre. Your typical GI set but then you have “Super” and “Ultra” Game-Improvement irons thrown in for good measure as well. For 2020, sets like the COBRA Golf T-Rail Hybrid iron set comes to mind as an example of the latter.

There’s no shortage of options when it comes to GI irons and the range on Demo Day at Orange County National Golf Resort and Lodge was full of options. This category was extremely competitive in determining nominees let alone finalists. Game-Improvement irons come in all shapes and sizes. This is something that you will see with the winners that were selected.

Points were allocated for the following (maximum of 10 pts)

  • Performance
  • Aesthetics
  • Sound/Feel
  • Innovation
  • Price Point

So, here are your 2020 Teezy Awards winners for the Top Game-Improvement Category.

Gold – Wilson Golf D7 Forged (48/50)

Are these irons a Game-Improvement iron? The answer is yes. Remember, Wilson has their “F” (Feel), “C” (Control), and “D” (Distance) classifications for their iron sets. These irons had me salivating since the end of October when I was first shown them at the Ontario Golf Industry Expo. My first time seeing them, I could not wait to get them in-hand. The wait was worth it. These D7 Forged irons are amazing! These irons are built featuring the same chassis of the D7 from 2019 and the FG Tour V6 before that. They feature “Power Hole” and “Power Chamber” technologies that yield more elasticity of the clubface resulting in better energy transfer and more ball speed, resulting in more distance. The D7 Forged are forged from 8620 Carbon Steel and the feel is what you would expect. Soft, but with a side of “oomph”. These irons have a compact head shape and a thinner topline both features that are typically not seen in a GI iron. Their booth was into the wind and the results did not seem like it. Even into the wind, the ballflight appeared to be longer than my gamers which feature the same loft (PW is 44*). Looks, performance, it’s all there in these D7 Forged irons. They might have been the best irons that I made swings with at the show. Period! $899.99 USD

Silver – Tour Edge Exotics EXS 220/EXS 220h (46/50)

There’s a lot to like about the Exotics EXS 220/220h irons from Tour Edge Golf. This is a set of irons that you could blend if you wanted to. Use the hybrid iron EXS 220h in the long irons and the 220 in the short irons. The lofts are strong with the PW coming in at 42*. These hollow-bodied irons are loaded with technology. They have their SpiderWeb VFT Tech face that enhances the sweet spot (across the entire face). Tungsten toe-weighting that increases the forgiveness of these irons and a whole lot more that I could go on about. I really love the overall looks of these irons as they look “super-charged”. The topline is moderate (thicker in the 220h) and the offsets are progressive. Another very strong performer in less than ideal conditions. The carry yardage was impressive and the feel was “explosive” off of the face. Working the ball around with the EXS 220 was manageable while the 220h was more in the “aim and fire” mindset. The 220h just wants to go straight. Another strong performance from Tour Edge Golf.  A ton of bang for the golfer buck. $660.00 USD (Steel) $780.00 USD (Graphite)

Bronze – Cobra Golf KING SPEEDZONE ONE Length (45/50)

The KING SPEEDZONE ONE Length irons are another set of formidable GI irons available to golfers for 2020. These are irons that feature some terrific innovation from an R&D point of view. Most notably, this is seen in the address position. Never before KING SZ, have I seen an iron set that had a carbon-fibre topline. It’s smart too. By having a topline constructed of carbon-fibre engineers at COBRA Golf were able to place the weight low and back in the head. Therefore making these KING SZ ONE Length irons a set of irons that are easy to launch while increasing the MOI. Featuring their PWRSHELL forged face the sweet spot is massive and the ball speed is also increased off of the face. Aesthetically-speaking, they lost a few points for me but I love the carbon-fibre in the topline which is moderate to moderate-thick. These irons are long and straight some of which is a by-product of the stronger lofts are strong in the KING SPEEDZONE irons (PW is 42.5*). All of the irons are 37.5″ in length, and as mentioned in the past, I am very much a proponent of ONE Length irons. Golfers looking for a new set of irons could do themselves a favor by going with the KING SPEEDZONE ONE Length irons. $799.99 USD (Graphite + $100)
