“First Impressions” Review – Cobra Golf KING F9 SPEEDBACK Irons

When it comes to irons that impress some take a little longer than others. Meanwhile, there are some products that make such a tremendous first impression that you just know when you have a special piece of golf equipment in your hands. The new Cobra Golf KING F9 SPEEDBACK irons are one such example.

Having put the KING F8 ONE Length irons through their paces during a somewhat lengthy testing period in 2018  I made the final conclusion that they were the most fun I had swinging a set of irons (REVIEW HERE).

The thing about movies when they bring out a sequel is that there’s always the concern that the sequel doesn’t quite make the grade. I mean sure, the movie had its moments of comedy but it’s not the same. Look at Caddyshack vs Caddyshack 2 (has anyone watched the sequel?) When it comes to Cobra golf this hasn’t been quite the issue. When they first released ONE Length iron (2017’s F7) it was a decent enough offering in my eyes. The ONE Length concept model made sense to me and they were easy irons to swing and for the short time and limited experience with them, I walked away thinking that they would help a ton of golfers willing to give them a chance. The sequel in 2018 was fantastic but now in 2019 golfers see the third iteration. The KING F9 SPEEDBACK irons.

***If you haven’t seen the most recent review prior to this, I’ve changed the format up just a little bit. All of the technical information is now “The Pre-Shot Routine”. “The Transition” is how I break down the performance while “The Finish” is my final conclusion.

The Pre-Shot Routine

When it comes to Cobra Golf I have said for several years that Cobra Golf is one of the biggest “movers and shakers” in the golf industry. Cobra Golf is always finding a way to be innovative. It’s one of the things that I admire about Cobra Golf and mentioned this fact to Tom Olsavsky during my time spent with him at the 2019 PGA Show Demo Day.  With that thought comes a question. How? “How do they (Cobra Golf) produce products that seemingly are better year after year?”. The answer is strenuous R&D efforts, brainstorming, and model development long before consumers and in some cases TOUR player’s see them.

When it came to the design of the KING F9 SPEEDBACK irons innovation and R&D were definitely integral components to the development of this iron set. Before we delve too deep into the irons let’s look at their moniker. “SPEEDBACK Technology”. In designing this iron set Cobra Golf sought out a way to make these irons “long, stable and accurate”. This was achieved by placing the CG (Center of Gravity) low while creating a design with high MOI.

cobraspeed

By adding a “steel belt” that is wrapped around the rear perimeter of the head the weight was set low and back. The end game here is to maximize distance through more carry and better launch conditions. When it came to increasing the MOI (stability or resistance to twisting) Cobra Golf R&D utilized the addition of Tungsten (33-grams between the heel and toe) of the long and mid irons (4-7).  Like its predecessor, the KING F9 SPEEDBACK irons feature the PWRSHELL face. The face features variable thickness which makes the size of the sweet spot just a little bit larger (E9 Variable Thickness). The forged PWRSHELL design “features a deep undercut sole with a 1.2 mm internal Speed Channel that absorbs and returns more energy” resulting in higher ball speeds thus equating to longer distance.

Like the previous years, Cobra Golf is incorporating Cobra Connect into the KING F9 SPEEDBACK irons. It’s a great way to track your stats and performance. The KING F9 SPEEDBACK irons come in two versions. Cobra Golf offers the KING F9 SPEEDBACK irons in both a Variable length and ONE Length variant (all irons in the set are a 7-iron length). Cobra Golf didn’t skimp on the golf consumer on their stock shafts with these irons. The KING F9 SPEEDBACK irons come with either KBS Tour shafts (steel) or in the case of graphite, the Fujikura ATMOS 6 ONE Length shafts are featured. The grips are Cobra Lamkin Crossline grips.

The Transition

(Conditions at Orange County National Golf Resort and Lodge while swinging Cobra Golf products was sunny, breezy with a crosswind right to left. Later in the day with the temperature was about 64*F/18*C)

Aesthetics – When the KING F9 SPEEDBACK irons are sitting in the golf bag it’s hard not to notice the carbon composite in the cavity immediately. It looks sleek and it was something done on the previous iteration. There is a slight difference between the Variable Length and the ONE Length in this area. The paint scheme. The Variable Length irons say “SPEEDBACK” in red whereas the ONE Length have it in blue and red. When compared to the F8 from 2018 I think the cavity view of these irons looks somewhat “boxy”. It just wasn’t blended in a way that I thought it could have been. Perhaps, it’s just a simple matter of the paint-filled areas where the tungsten is placed and advertised. They have a relatively “futuristic” look to them.

Flipping the club over into the address position you’ll see a relatively moderate topline. There are thinner toplines in this iron category (GI) but there are some others that make this look head look sleek and svelte when looking down at it. In the address position, for some reason, something bugged me. While there is some offset (as is the case with most GI irons) it wasn’t the offset that bugged me. There was something that I didn’t like with the cavity or something to that effect. Even as I write this review I still have a hard time expressing the right thought that I’m looking for. Unsettling maybe? That said, it’s not like the looks would sway me from not playing them.

f9irontop

Looking at the club face I loved the milling on the face. Although, the milled face isn’t strictly for aesthetics. There’s a high level of functionality involved as the milled faces aid in creating precise lofts with a perfectly flat surface area to work with. The hosel lengths vary for moving weight around to get the best CG location. Groovy right? Oh, speaking of groovy. Even though you can’t see them, Cobra Golf designed these irons to have three different spin “groove cuts”. The long irons featured Milled V-Grooves (4-7), the 8-PW has Milled U-Grooves, while the GW-SW have Wedge Grooves.

Sound/Feel – I won’t waste any time here. These irons sound and felt great. Overall, they were the best sounding clubs acoustically speaking. They have a “crack” that I associate to them. That said, the feel isn’t harsh and that fact can be attributed to the multi-material construction of the badge (aluminum, TPU (Thermoplastic Polyurethane) and acrylic foam). Literature from Cobra golf says that these materials “promote a softer, more responsive feel” and they do just that. Strikes off of the massive sweet spot were distinct and crisp. Especially when it came to the long irons.

Performance – This is the facet of testing and reviews that golfers want to know about. Especially when dealing in a situation where the term of testing isn’t long by any stretch and limited to only so many swings. But these sticks PERFORM!

f9ironface

The KING F9 SPEEDBACK irons absolutely “killed it” on Demo Day. After I made my first swing with them I turned back to the bleachers at their demo area where my wife (Crystal) was sitting. I just shook my head. I knew with one swing that these irons were every bit as good as the F8 or dare I say… Better! That first strike was as crisp as any that I can recollect. The ball flight was long (7i) and it was “dead straight”. No sign of curvature whatsoever (bear in mind the wind direction). The next swing resulted in the same way… Two shots that were identical in every way. So I changed clubs. I selected a 5i and it was more of the same. I took 10 swings with the KING F9 SPEEDBACK irons and knew that they were one of the best for me during the show. At the very least, I walked away knowing that the F9 SPEEDBACK irons were an improvement over the incumbent.

Flighting the ball wasn’t an issue when adjusting to my right a little and hitting into the “teeth of the wind” a little more. Drawing and cut shots. No problem there as well. Like I said, these irons “killed it”. They nearly stole the show in their Teezy Award category (37/40 points).

f9ironcav

The Finish

When Cobra Golf introduced the KING F9 SPEEDBACK irons they already had a name to live up to. Not only was the previous generation “the most fun I’ve ever had swinging an iron (in my life)” but the really big brother (KING F9 SPEEDBACK driver) had already seen victories on professional TOUR’s worldwide (Lexi and Bryson).

Yes, there are better-looking irons in the category but looks aren’t everything. My issue was two minor things where one of which was something that I still can’t put a finger on to this day. When a golf club is this fun and easy to swing and you see immediate results it says a lot. These irons are geared towards 5-25 handicap golfers. Heck, if you’re Scratch or better why not? Rickie Fowler has KING F9 SPEEDBACK  4-iron in his bag. If it’s good enough for him… Why wouldn’t it be good for us?

If you’re looking for a 2019 iron set that you’ll get your golf consumers dollars worth for I highly recommend the Cobra Golf KING F9 SPEEDBACK irons.

2019 PGA Show Teezy Awards – “Best of the Rest”

With the excitement of The Oscar’s being handed out (I didn’t watch a second of it) the time has come. The pomp, circumstance, and electricity that is the Teezy Awards. This is the best of the rest… and in anticipation of next year I am going to be doing the presentation “Olympics-style”. Instead of talking about a winner and a runner-up there will be Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals awarded. So, without further delay.

showfront

A new year with a different angle.

The Teezy Awards… 2019 PGA Merchandise Show “Best of the Rest”.

Top Men’s Apparel

GOLD (Bald Head Blues) This range of men’s golf apparel has an uncanny ability. The ability to somehow transport you from the rigors of everyday life to somewhere more relaxing. Perhaps somewhere off of the Nort Carolina coast where the brand gets its name from. Apparel from Bald Head Blues is light, bright, and comfortable. The quality and attention to detail are second to nobody in the business. Look for a review in the near future regarding their 1/4 Zip Clubhouse sweater.

SILVER (Original Penguin) They have a complete line of men’s apparel. From lifestyle t-shirts to pants and everything in between. The patterns are fun and they always have a theme. In one line the theme is 50’s camping. They’re fun, bold and each print hs “Pete the Penguin” in there somewhere.

BRONZE (Columbia Sportswear) – I’ll admit it. Columbia Sportswear surprised me just a little bit. It wasn’t so much the fact that they had eye-pleasing colors nor was I surprised by their technology as far as keeping golfer’s comfortable in all elements. What really surprised me was their price point. Their range of products has a very attractive price tag attached to them. the flaw, you will only find them in Pro Shops where they have been brought in.

Top Women’s Apparel (As chosen by Crystal Toth)

GOLD (Motherputter) – After the show, women’s’ golf contributor wrote a piece on Motherputter. The brand features cutting edge styles that are bold. Styles that take you from the course to the club or vice versa. Motherputter also happens to have a wide variety of sizing. How do I know that Motherputter is good? Crystal hasn’t stopped talking about them.

SILVER (Golftini) – You might have seen women’s apparel from Golftini in the past. On-Air personalities Bailey Mosier and Nicole Castrale raved about them. Recently, Amanda Blumenherst was on GC Morning Drive wearing Golftini fashion. They’re trendy, smart and vivid. Golftini carries women’s golf apparel (and beyond) that features everything from Polos, Ponchos, Pants, and Skorts. One of the two brands that Crystal has talked about a lot since the show.

(BRONZE Jane Fifteen Thirty) – Boasting a blend of perfect fabric and perfect fit and fashion that’ll wear well anywhere comes Jane Fifteen Thirty. The beauty of their apparel is two-fold. Their range features slimming designs and mesh accents. Crystal was a sucker for the mesh accents where it was featured in the fashion that she looked at during the show. What really caught her attention was how they approached their sizing (sizes run from 1 to 7 (4XL) and how the tops are designed with longer length in mind.

Top Accessories

GOLD (Evolve Golf)When it comes to accessories Evolve Golf has a lot of things right. But before I get into that I just wanted to talk about their booth at the 2019 PGA Show. The same booth has been used for the last 9 years. Their booth is constructed from repurposed wood. Evolve Golf cares about nature and how we impact Earth. Their Epoch golf tees are more durable than the standard wood tee or other similar plastic tees. The tees also feature their “Sweet Spot System” ensuring that you have the ball teed up at just the right height. Evolve Golf is more than tees as they also have a series of pitch mark repair tools, ball markers, and even their Motion Wool socks. More importantly, is Project Good Woods. Project Good Woods is an initiative that saw Evolve Golf coordinate with the Arbor Day Foundation. Their goal was to produce wood tees that do not cost more than the conventional wood tee but to “give back to the environment by a portion of the sale going the Arbor Day Foundation in the clubs region and in the clubs name”. This initiative has been instrumental in the planting of 10,000 trees.

SILVER (Zero Friction) – Zero Friction. They carry a wide range of products from golf tees, golf balls and now stand bags. The two-piece Spectra Matte finished golf balls come in bright colors. Yellow, Blue, and Red to name a few. Their Spectra SuperTubes come with a glove, 3 Spectra golf balls, and 10 tees. A perfect way to test out their products if you aren’t sure about them. Their Cabretta Elite golf gloves come in a wide variety of colors (too many to list) and the real winner here is that the gloves come in a Universal Fit. One size fits most. If I were to run a Pro Shop again, there is no doubt which gloves I’m carrying and offering to golfers. Zero Friction.

BRONZE (Oliver Thomas) Another exhibitor that Crystal was pretty hyped about. She was pretty excited when she told me about her discovery at the show. Oliver Thomas has a line of tote bags, duffle bags and more. Products feature “Everyday Carry meets Modern Function”. Their range also features machine washable totes and duffle bags (with built-in “secret stash” organization pocket), backpacks, crossbody bags, cosmetic cases, and fanny packs that are lightweight and water-resistant.

Top Electronics (including Rangefinders and GPS)

GOLD (GOLFBUDDY)GOLFBUDDY claims the top honors in the Top Electronics category. Featuring everything from laser rangefinders and GPS units. New to the range for 2019 is their uber-impressive GolfBuddy aim W10 golf GPS SmartWatch that features a full-color screen and even green undulation (where available). The W10 comes pre-loaded with 40,000 golf courses in its library, automatic course updates (GOLFBUDDY app) and 13 hours of battery life in golf mode. This last point alone I challenge because I am always a skeptic about these claims. I’ve tested similar products that boasted the same just to come up well short. The W10 would be worth a test.

SILVER (OptiShokz) – From the same people that brought you the AfterShokz Trekz Air that received a ton of praise from these pages comes OptiShokz. Or to be more precise the OptiShokz Revvez. The OptiShokz Revez are sunglasses meets headphones but with a difference. These sunglasses integrate sunglasses and headphones in one. Featuring the same Bone Conduction Technology as the Trekz Air that I reviewed in 2018 the sound quality promises to deliver while keeping you safe due to their open-ear construction. OptiShokz Revvez will come with replaceable lenses including a Polarized version that those on the water will appreciate.

BRONZE (aboutGOLF) – I never thought that I would see the day where I would put a launch monitor/simulator up for a nomination. Mostly because these aren’t what your typical golfer could afford to put in our house. After all, we all can’t be the President of the United States. But here we are. aboutGOLF is the only simulator that is endorsed by both the PGA TOUR and Golf Channel. aboutGOLF features a new platform for 2019 called “aG Links”. This platform has too many features to list including aG Balance Pro weight and balance analysis, aG Flix video analysis and in a nutshell, is a full-blown entertainment system.

Top Footwear

GOLD (Skechers GO Golf) – When it comes to the number of styles, colors, and price point there was no stronger product range in the golf footwear category at the 2019 PGA Show. Skechers golf footwear won’t cost consumers any more than $150 (GO Golf Pro V.4 Honors) and include the ultralight GO GOLF MAX. When I picked them up there was almost literally no weight to them. For women, the varieties are plentiful, to say the least with models of shoes like the GO GOLF Max, GO GOLF Draw and the blingy GO GOLF Shine all being available. Skechers knows feet and they definitely know shoes as well. By the way, they also do have some apparel as well.

SILVER (TRUE Linkswear)From the Pacific Northwest comes TRUE Linkswear. For those of you who have followed me for a long time, you might know that TRUE Linkswear holds a special place in my heart. In a way, I nearly avoid writing about them because some might view my feelings as partial. I’m not. 2019 has seen the launch of some great shoes from Jason Moore (PGA TOUR star Ryan Moore’s brother) and company. Headlining the list are the TRUE Major. Designed with out of the box comfort in mind the TRUE Major features a 2-year waterproof design, full-grain leather a paracord lacing system and so much more. This is their most-refined shoe in my opinion. A performer that looks great. The bar was set really high with this shoe. Also of note are the OG Premium. The OG Premium is a reconstructed version of 2018’s TRUE Orgininal but features softer leather and improved waterproofing and comfort.

BRONZE (Jack Grace USA) –  A classic saddle shoe with a twist. Or shall I say… A swap? Jack Grace USA features what the company calls “Saddle Swap Technology”. Do you get bored easily? Do you have a keen fashion sense? If so then Jack Grace USA might be the ideal golf shoe for you. Why have a bunch of different colored shoes when you can have one pair of shoes and multiple saddles that you can quickly and simply change to match your wardrobe for a day on the links? That’s the genius behind Jack Grace USA. Jack Grace also features construction from premium leather.

Top Training Aid

GOLD (Colour Path Golf) – Already the focus of a post-show article Colour Path Golf was a product that literally went from “What’s the point?” to “Genius”. Colour Path Golf relies on different colors and shapes to help the instructor teach golf to their students. Colour Path Golf is something that I’ve never seen in the industry meaning that it allows golfers to be visual learners in a way which we’ve never seen before. Through using the pieces in the kit swing faults can be easily explained with a ton of visual cues. Say you have an issue with leaving your shot pushed out to the right (RH golfer) and you don’t understand the explanation. Now you can see what you don’t understand. I saw this product at Demo Day and I was baffled about what it does. Then I had my appointment… IT’S SO SMART.

SILVER (PuttOUT Golf) – How many times do you use the driver during a round of golf? Assuming that any given course has 14 driving holes you might use it 14 times. Sometimes, the driver isn’t the right play. In comparison, how many times do you stroke a putter? Maybe 30 times… or a touch less or dare I say a few more. The PuttOUT Pressure Putt Trainer is a product that allows you to practice your putting at home (if you have carpet), a hotel room if you’re on the road or on any green where there may not be a hole cut where you’d like. The PuttOUT Pressure Putt Trainer is a ramp that simply returns your ball on a “made” putt. The trainer folds pretty flat so it’s highly transportable and can sit in your golf bag. PuttOUT has also recently launched a putting mirror and alignment gate.

BRONZE (Acu-Strike) – Acu-Strike is a training aid that can help golfers in achieving the perfect strike. This impact training mat provides instant feedback in letting you know there where your impact was in relation to the ball. Ideally, we want our divot to be after the ball. Anything before the ball is fat and you all but guarantee a poor result. Acu-Strike identifies where the golf club bottoms out turning the area dark. Also, Acu-Strike gives feedback on club path through impact.

Top Health and Wellness

GOLD (HempMe) – Be on the lookout for a review of HempMe Rx CBD Ointment. There’s no doubt that one of the up and coming products at the PGA Show are products that are CBD based. Having been sore both Crystal and I decided to try some of their ointment. Well, what I can tell you is that the HempMe ointment worked. The pain was relieved within 45 minutes (for me) and in the case of an area that hurt… I was no longer in pain. I used to be the biggest pride when it came to CBD or Cannabis… that has since changed because I’ve seen and experienced what some of the benefits are.

SILVER (SCNS – 1st Tee) – Nutrition bars are a massive industry in general. 1st Tee offers a wide variety of flavors including Honey Almond, Dark Chocolate Chip, Oatmeal Raisin and more. Also,  SCNS offers nutrition bars that are gluten and dairy free and beef jerky. Everything that I sampled had very good taste and I would have no issue having a bar before my round. SCNS also happens to be a partner of the First Tee Program. “The First Tee is an organization that provides positive youth development through golf. SCNS is proud to donate $0.15 from the sale of each 1st Tee Dark Chocolate Chip Trail Mix Bar and 10th Tee Cranberry Trail Mix Bar, to The First Tee®, providing positive youth development through golf”.

BRONZE (Gelliflex)The very last product that I saw during the 2019 PGA was the Gelliflex Abacus. The Gelliflex Abacus is a self-therapy massage device. We’ve seen what an abacus is. A counting device that uses beads. The built on an H-frame the Gelliflex Abacus incorporates firm gel balls (Gelliprene) to help golfers massage their hands, wrists, elbows, and forearms. Also, the Gelliflex can be used for administering foot massage as well. This was a product that I really liked… and enjoyed.

IMG_20190123_224235 (1)

Top New Product

Stroke of Luck – The Stroke of Luck putting matt is my pick for Top New Product of the 2019 PGA Merchandise Show. The Stroke of Luck putting matt combines a training aid (putting matt) with card games like poker. Stroke of Luck is one of those products that brought joy to people while I was in attendance at their booth during the show. You could tell people were having fun and really enjoyed it. The options of card games using Stroke of Luck are too numerous to list. Whether you’re playing poker with other golfers or by themselves the matt is a ton of fun.

The Stroke of Luck putting matt could potentially shine in the golf industry from a business standpoint. How many tournaments or leagues have you played in that were in a rain delay or canceled altogether? Instead of squawking about the rain your Pro Shop could have a Stroke of Luck Putting matt on hand. People could engage in playing poker while doing some golf-related activity while still supporting the club.

I loved this product!!

Motherputter – “The New Face of Ladies Golf Wear”

When you hear “Motherputter” what do you think of? It is probably something close to
what I thought of the first time I heard it. But it is quite the opposite.

motherputter-logo-300

Motherputter is actually a woman’s golf apparel company. Why a name like “Motherputter”, you ask? The answer is Simple. Te name stems from a mother with a love for golf. There are no words that can describe it when you love something. It was very much like this with Motherputter. There was an issue for Kim Tuttle. There were no clothes that were liked and unique to Kim. So, Ms. Tuttle decided to make her own line and make it unique to her and unique it is.

Kim Tuttle the “Chief Chick of Fashion” is very independent with a style all her own.
She found a passion for fashion which led her to a degree from Texas Tech University
in Fashion Merchandising. She followed many paths which eventually led her to New
York City. After taking a 20-year hiatus from the fashion industry to venture into politics she returned to the fashion industry. Getting back to the fashion industry she became obsessed with the game of golf.

motherp1

I first heard of Motherputter on the 2019 PGA Show website and I won’t lie. The name is what caught my attention. Clothing is like a nice bottle of wine for me, a unique name and you have my attention. In my opinion,  I found Motherputter to be the “wine” of the PGA Show. There were so many other great lines but Motherputter just called to me.

Their designs were unique and so different. They had everything from a bomber jacket
to skorts to dresses. The way the colors of the line mixed it got my attention. There
was a little flash of lime green on that black skirt or there was a nice red collar on the
pink shirt… I know pink and red clashes right? Wrong! Motherputter made it work. She
said she liked the red and pink so why not mix them together. It looked great and it
worked so well together.

Kim always somehow has a way to incorporate her Motherputter logo put into the clothing and she makes it work. There was a lot of black and white in her line because it is a girl’s best friend right? Once again you would be wrong she made so many designs work with silvers. She made so many successful designs with florals patterns too. The thing that I love the most about the Motherputter line is the ease of how you can go from the course to a night out on the town.

The dresses are very elegant looking and they are put together nicely. Most of her
clothing has mesh to allow your body to breathe. They all mix so well. You can throw
that Silver quilt type skirt with that dressy floral shirt and then top it off with the bomber jacket and a nice pair of shoes. Nobody would know that you just got off the golf course.
Kim made them very unique to the “average woman”. The clothing is something you
would not expect to see anywhere let alone on a golf course. There was a lot of mesh put
into the lines and I really like the mesh on the clothing too. She put mesh in the sleeves
or on the jacket. Some of the jackets were reversible so you could get 2 looks with 1
a piece of clothing.

Motherputter carries clothing up to an XL which makes me interested even more. As a larger woman, it is hard to find nice clothing that can fit me. Due to this fact that they carry a larger size it makes me want to try their stuff even more. One day, I hope to get my hands on some of their clothing and if I do I will tell you exactly how I feel about them.

In the meantime, I will stick to what I know about them. They have gorgeous clothing in a large variety of sizes and they could really take the women’s golf apparel game by storm. Keep it up Motherputter I look forward to seeing what you come up with next.

“First Impressions” Review – Sacks Parente Series 39 Blade Putter

In a recent poll, I asked my Followers what they would like to see a review on next. In a way, it was a bit to my surprise that the majority of people voted for a putter review. But what surprised me more is how handily a putter review won by. As always, thanks to all who participated. I’ll be posting polls as a way to increase interaction at Until The Next Tee.

Make no mistake about it. I rolled a ton of putters during the 2019 PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando, Florida and eventually I will be writing about all of them. However, for this review, I’ve elected to write a review on a putter so new that at the time their website wasn’t even published. That manufacturer is Sacks Parente. The model of putter that I’ve elected to write about is their Series 39 Blade Putter.

About Sacks Parente

Sacks Parente is the brainchild of Steve Sacks and Rich Parente. Sacks Parente firmly believes that the best only comes when things are not taken for granted. The Camarillo, California based putter manufacturer believes in being innovative through science-based methods. These methods include Sacks Parente’s patented “Ultra Low Balance Point” (ULBP) which aids the golfer in squaring the face at impact through a natural release. While there are ways to create an Ultra Low Balance Point through the use of using an over-weighted head it’s an engineering feat to accomplish this with a head that only weighs 350-360 grams. So how does Sacks Parente accomplish this?

The first thing that they did was develop a putter grip that weighed less than 35-grams. For comparison, sake the average pistol-style putter grip weighs approximately 60-grams (give or take a few grams). This lightweight grip is a “key component” of their ULBP technology.  Another integral part of the ULBP technology that Sacks Parente packs into their putters is the lightweight composite shafts that Sacks Parente employs. The shafts weigh in between 30 and 35-grams which is literally a fraction of the weight of a stereotypical putter shaft. If you haven’t made putts with a composite shaft it really changes the feel of the putter (especially through impact).

Last but not least is the design of their heads. Putters from Sacks Parente feature a very high MOI. To achieve this resistance to twisting at impact where putts haven’t been struck on the sweet spot Sacks Parente uses Tungsten inserts in the heel and toe of their putter heads. In doing so, Sacks Parente shifted more weight to the peripheries of the putter as opposed to the center of the head.

The Series 39 Blade Putter

The Series 39 Blade Putter is a true blade putter by definition. A design that has withstood the test of time. Blade putters are elegant and the Series 39 is no exception. What’s different about this blade putter is the high MOI design. Its center of gravity is located right in between the front and back of the putter design.

The 39 Series Blade putter also has an insert. Unlike other putters that use a polymer, copper or carbon fiber insert Sacks Parente uses patent-pending AL24. It’s an ultra-lightweight material that further allows the weight to be moved to the perimeter. According to Sacks Parente AL24 also absorbs vibration “100 times better than steel”.

Observations

When I finally got to the putting green at the 2019 PGA Show Demo Day things were wrapping up for the day. The sun was quite literally setting on Demo Day. This translated into the Bermuda-grass having grown and the putting surface had been trampled on by thousands of attendees. Making it there to roll a few putts was nearly an afterthought.

The first putters that I rolled for the week of the show were, in fact, the Series 39 Blade from Sacks Parente. Having published a press release prior to the PGA Show I knew what these putters were going to look like. I just had no idea how pretty they truly were. Not only are they elegant as a blade putter should be I would identify them as exquisite. Everything about them exuded class. The sole, the face everything. Ultimately the pictures in the press kit didn’t do them justice. What didn’t show up in the pictures was the milling of the face. Like I’ve already alluded to… exquisite. Even the branding on the bottom of the putter was very well done. They left no stone unturned in the aesthetics department of this putter.

I picked a hole location that was likely the trickiest spot on the putting surface at Orange County National Golf Resort and Lodge. This putt was downhill and slid right to left. In a word, it was a “greasy, slick” putt. Even the representative said that I picked a fun putt. Admittedly, I didn’t want to be in anybody else’s way. My first stroke was a bit wayward as I hadn’t made a putt with this putter before. The overall lightweight threw me off and I blew my putt past the hole. The second stroke fared much better and it didn’t take me long to adjust. The sightline is basic as it should be on a blade putter as it’s just a simple notch with black paintfill. Without knowing the specifics of the MOI numbers (I forgot to ask at the time) there was no twisting through impact. The face was square through impact and I think a lot can be said of their research in this area. Rolls were as true as can be considering the conditions of the green at this time of the day. The feel was fantastic off of the face.

Conclusion

The Sacks Parente Series 39 Blade putter is a fine piece of craftsmanship. The looks are delicate and exude class. Typically, I’m a mallet guy (on the heavy side) mostly because they are more forgiving. I’ve always loved the look of blade putters but my stroke hasn’t necessarily agreed with my eye. The Series 39 Blade changed that outlook. This is a 350-360 gram head that feels like it should be more than 400-grams. I would play this putter and feel good about it. The Series 39 Blade was a finalist for a Teezy Award in the “Top Putter” category. The Series 39 amassed 38/40 points. The Series 39 Blade comes in two versions and with it two different price points. The Series 39 Player’s Edition retails for $600 USD while the Series 39 Tour Edition retails for $1200 USD as it’s made from 316L Surgical Steel. For more information please visit https://sacksparente.com/

2019 PGA Show -“Best of The Rest” Nominations

With the 2019 PGA Show Equipment Edition Teezy Awards in the books, it’s time to focus on the “Best of the Rest”. These are products ranging from apparel to footwear and everything else in between. Of course, for the most part, these are awards that aren’t given points for performance but what I look at are things like style, price point and even in some cases backstories. How did a company come to be, what drove them to get involved in the industry.

Colour Path Golf Brightens The Way To Learn How to Golf

Golf Instruction. At times it has become very convoluted. Instructors too often make it more confusing than it really has to be. Some instructors may not like me saying this but it’s the truth. Then there are the other issues, for example. Whenever some new ideas come out to teach players how to play golf with an easier method other instructors do their best to refute others.

For the most part, it’s up to the students themselves to translate what the instructor is saying and then take it home where they have to practice on their own a week or two in between sessions. Often the information can be lost in translation and in some cases, the student loses the explanation of the golf swing before they leave their session.

download (2)

Even though a training aid has been used in some cases, the student still doesn’t really have a visual cue to draw from allowing them better retention of instruction. It’s a fact that people (in general) can understand something easier with visual cues. I’m one of those individuals and in the case of those with learning disabilities (Autism Spectrum Disorder), this is, even more, the case.

Colour Path Golf is a ground-breaking concept to help instructors teach golf and for their students to learn the game just a little bit easier. PGA Professionals John Glenn and Kevin Merry are the Co-Founders of this revolutionary method. Through the use of colour-coded plastic shapes. In total there are four colours (green, red, yellow and blue) that are used to show students where to apply different attention of detail to the swing. For example, where to apply power. Essentially, Colour Path Golf could almost be described as a “jigsaw puzzle for your golf swing”. Even one yellow ruler can help you improve.

The Colours

  1. Yellow – Yellow pieces are used to get your attention. Think like a traffic light… it means caution.
  2. Blue – It’s a cooling colour. Look at the instrument panel/climate control on your car. The air conditioner is cool. This is precisely what your blue pieces are for. In my case, the takeaway would reflect a blue piece.
  3. Green – This means Go. Or relax. start to accelerate upon completing the backswing and transition.
  4. Red – It can be used for a couple of reasons. The first reason is for control. Think face angle or ball position. But, red can also be used in areas of the swing where we need to apply power. Think of that 24″ or so before impact and immediately post-impact. Have you been told that you decelerate? These pieces could help relate easier.

While at Demo Day I saw Colour Path Golf set-up and knowing that I had an appointment later in the week it caught my eye. Honestly, I couldn’t fathom what it was or how it worked. I had the pleasure meeting and talking with Kevin Merry at the 2019 PGA Merchandise Show later in the week and he explained everything that is Colour Path Golf to me. It didn’t take long for me to get it.  I really do think that Colour Path Golf could be “the path” to help you improve your golf game. Instructors themselves, really need to take note.

Look for more to come on this revolutionary method in the future.
